Understanding High Blood Pressure
Hypertension is one of the most common, and most manageable, health conditions in adults. This guide walks through what it means for you and what you can do about it. Normal High
Blood pressure is a range, not a single verdict. Where you sit on it can shift — and move back — over time.
The two numbers
120/80mmHg
Systolic — pressure while your heart beats
Diastolic — pressure while it rests
A typical healthy reading is below 120/80. Numbers consistently at or above 130/80 are considered elevated — worth a conversation with your doctor, not a cause for alarm.
What you can do
Move & eat
- A 30-minute walk most days
- Fresh food over salty, packaged food
- Vegetables, fruit, whole grains, lean protein
Daily habits
- Limit alcohol; avoid smoking
- Small stress outlets — sleep, breathing, hobbies
- Keep regular checkups to track trends
Medication, if prescribed
- Take it consistently, even feeling fine
- High BP often has no symptoms — it’s still working
- Ask before stopping or changing a dose
A reassuring note: high blood pressure is extremely common and very treatable. Most people who manage it well go on to live full, active lives. Small, steady changes tend to matter more than dramatic overhauls — progress adds up.
Ask your doctor
- What is my current blood pressure goal?
- Should I monitor it at home?
- What lifestyle changes fit my situation?
- How often should it be checked?
