As published in _The Lancet_ in May 2026, PCOS ( Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is being renamed Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) to better serve over 170 million people worldwide.
The old name misleadingly suggested the condition was just about ovarian cysts. In contrast, the new name accurately highlights its complex, systemic hormonal and metabolic effects.
This change was driven by a global collaboration between patients and medical professionals.
Over the next three years, a comprehensive transition plan will roll out this new name globally.
The ultimate goals of this update are to raise awareness, speed up accurate diagnoses, reduce stigma, and significantly improve healthcare quality and treatment outcomes for patients.
